Everything here largely uses a three button control scheme – the three lower face buttons, with occasional usage of triangle and the direction buttons thrown in for good measure. So the main crux of gameplay here is that you complete a series of brief challenges, being given instructions on how to play just seconds before they begin. Sound-wise, there’s various 90’s-style effects such as the announcer saying “ATTENTION” as the game explains a new control scheme, but otherwise music and noises are all par for the course.Īrguably one of the earliest ‘microgame’ collections out there (certainly pre-dating the first I played, WarioWare), Bishi Bashi Special is a very unique game that plays well – although revisiting it on Vita makes me realise it’s far more of a multiplayer experience than one to be enjoyed on your own.
The variety is great, and the game is always cheerful, vibrant and varied (alongside sporting a solid framerate).
In game, graphics can vary wildly – at times you’ll be controlling a anime-style 2D girl as she jumps from side to side, or shaking a can of fizzy drink to help it take off into space at others you’ll be controlling a polygonal man as he avoids oncoming obstacles or driving a vehicle pushing others off the roof of a building from a top-down view. The menus are predictably colourful and bright – you can switch between the two different titles contained within at any point – and these elements are repeated later on as you move between the mini-games wracking up points. Graphically, Bishi Bashi Special is a big mix of ideas in one pot – some of them look brilliant, some of them are simplistic, but all of them mesh together well to create a crazy, schizophrenic time. The micro-games are disparate, feeling like they’re pulled from a variety of different titles (much like WarioWare), so there’s nothing more to grasp on to here. As you can imagine, there’s no story in Bishi Bashi Special – this is a collection of two arcade micro-game collections ( Super Bishi Bashi and Hyper Bishi Bashi) ported over to the PS1.
